Multicriteria Mapping (MCM) is a participatory, multi-criteria appraisal method for addressing contrasting perspectives on complex technical issues.  It aims to help 'open up' technical assessment by systematically 'mapping' the practical implications of alternative options, knowledges, framings and values.

The method assumes there is not necessarily a single 'best' solution. Like other methods, it can be used to yield a picture of what looks best overall. What's different is the way MCM links qualitative and quantitative information to help users explore how pictures of strategic choices change, depending on the view that is taken.

An MCM exercise involves a series of one-to-one interviews with experts or stakeholders, with the support of a dedicated software tool. Interviews are recorded and transcribed, providing a rich source of information on participants' deliberations, reasoning and arguments. The tool can also be used in group discussions. A second software tool is used to support the analysis of a set of MCM sessions.

This is the home page of a comprehensive website covering MCM that will be launched later in August 2008. Until then, you can get more information about MCM by sending an email to enquiries@multicriteria-mapping.org.
